  About the Author

  Chapter One

Willow rolled over in bed, hand smashing against the digital alarm clock to stop its blaring noise waking her up. She looked at the time and groaned, stretching to grab for her phone. Scrolling social media for a bit and then getting up to get ready for the day.

Over the summer, after completing her student teaching program, she applied to be a substitute teacher. She wanted to get experience to add to her resume to get a teaching job, eventually.

Willow knew that it would take a couple of weeks before there would be any openings for subbing, since the district warned her about that and the income would not be coming until the following month. So her routine would be to check the database every morning for job openings. While also applying for teaching jobs if there were any in the area.

Getting out of bed, setting her phone on the counter of her tiny kitchen, begins preparing the coffee maker while grabbing a cup from the cupboard. All the while, she was tapping her fingers against the cheap granite counter. Scrolling through her phone on social media listening to the drip coffeemaker’s sounds of the percolation, as the smell of coffee permeated the air.

Filling up the coffee cup, she thought about starting teaching. She was thankful that when it came time to look for districts around her area that the one that she was at the previous year as a student teacher had openings. She still wondered just how long it would take for openings to come up where she could get some money coming in. Since she had to help her roommate Amanda foot the bill. Amanda was understanding about Willow starting this new job and having to wait for opportunities to open up. However, it still made Willow guilty enough that she already knew that she would pull from her savings to help make up her end of the monthly rent.

Willow’s phone dinged as she put her cup of coffee on the counter. Clicking her phone, thinking it was a job notification, it was a social media post notification of one artist that she followed, Micheal Stanley. She smiled at the posting and liked it. It was a post about a particular piece that he had been working on for a time showing the process of how it was all coming together.

Willow scrolled through the different photos. Her smile broadened at a picture in the collection of him wearing coveralls while working on the piece in question. She had followed him years ago at his start and found that she liked to look at him just as much as his social media posts.

Just as she put her phone down, it dinged again, this time it was a job posting that made her fumble with her phone, almost dropping it on the floor. Taking a firmer grasp on her phone, she clicked the notification, thinking that a teacher was calling out before taking a trip or an appointment in a couple of weeks from now. But she saw it was for tomorrow. It was the middle school that she spent the previous year student teaching at, for a 7th-grade class.

Who misses days in the first week of school?

Willow shrugged her shoulders and accepted the assignment, smiling to herself because it was actually at the same school that she completed her student teaching over the previous year. Seeing some familiar faces again would be nice.

After so many outfit configurations, she settled with a long sleeve black and white patterned dress shirt, slacks, and some sensible shoes, which were always flats when she was teaching. Standing in her small bedroom, amongst clothes that were pulled from her closet, and dresser that were stacked up on her bed. Willow went through everything in a nervous dash to pick the perfect outfit for the day. Looking at her reflection in the mirror, she ran her fingers through her curly red hair in an attempt to tame it slightly. Making a note of pulling her sleeves down further to hide the tell-tell discolored blue and black marks that covered her arms as she sighed. Feeling butterflies in her stomach at the thought that there were only two hours till her first day of school.

“Chill out, you did this all last year. You can do this. You’re going to be an exceptional teacher” she says, looking into the mirror, at her reflection. Her smile slips from her face with a sigh.

“Only crazy people talk to themselves. So why am I still doing it? Ugh,” she said as she moved away from the mirror and started prepping her lunch for the day.

Willow walked into the front office, signed in for her first assignment, and made her way to the classroom that she would be in for the day to drop off her stuff. Then walked to the staff lounge to get some coffee before the day started. Immediately enveloped in a hug that took her by surprise, she had to move back to see who it was.

“What are you doing here, Willow? Thought you got your teaching credential?” The woman asked as she smiled at Willow.

Willow smiled back, knowing that accepting today’s job was a good transition into teaching independently after being hugged by her former mentor teacher, Julie.

Julie is an older woman with brown hair with a light gray stripe across her bangs. She wears a fitted suit dress, buttons meticulously done up. Wearing black heeled shoes has no speck of muck on them at all. Eyes were tired but still full of life. Julie had slight wrinkles around her green eyes but overall looks like a woman who takes care of herself. Wearing a light blue fitted suit looked used often, but not dirty. Straight brown hair had slight flyaways that were attempting to be held back by bobby pins.

“Oh well, I’m subbing while I look for teaching positions. Plus, someone put in for sick leave today.”

“Funny, since it's the second day of the first week. I wonder who it was?” Julie asked as she led Willow to an unoccupied seat. Willow fumbled for her phone, checking the notification email that she got.

“Greg’s class, of course.” Willow said with a laugh as she saw Julie’s eyes roll at that.

“Of course, he probably planned on partying after the first day back and had one too many,” Julie commented as another teacher went to sit with them.

“You're filling in for Greg. Well, you have a doozy,” Rob said, as Willow looked at him. He reminded of her teachers that she had in high school, always with a 5 o’clock shadow on his face, coffee cup in one hand and messy short brown hair. Anxiety started sparking within her, feeling her head pounding.

  “Why is that?”

  “Oh, you haven’t heard?
We have a celebrity amongst us. Or at least that’s what the principal told us. In the strictest of confidence to not post anything.” Rob said as Willow narrowed her eyes at him.

“Who is this celebrity? Or a kid of a celebrity?” She questioned, wanting to know if she knew who it was to be mentally ready for some pompous kid she would have for over an hour or more today.

“Kid of a celebrity. They wanted to keep it on the down-low so the kid could have a normal middle school experience at least, I guess. It’s some artist’s kid. Michael Something or rather.” Rob said as he rolled his eyes as Willow clicked on her phone.

“You think it’s Micheal Stanley? Unless you didn’t see him,” Willow trailed off as she swiped into a social media app and pulled up the photo that he uploaded that morning.

“Oh yeah, uh-huh, that’s him alright,” Rob confirmed as he smiled at Willow.

“I take it you're a fan?” He questioned, as Willow saw Julie smile as she went to take a sip of her coffee.

“A fan, more like a superfan. While she was my student teacher last year, she wouldn’t shut up about him.” Julie said as Willow felt her face heat at the admission from her previous supervisor teacher.

“I just like his work and want to tell more people about it. That’s all.” Willow said as she set her eyes on Julie. Julie smiled, elbowing Willow into her side.

“Yeah, you just like his artwork, not the man himself. Which I have to admit, he’s something to look at. Maybe you could take a chance if you see him,” Julie said with a knowing smile as Willow shook her head.

“Yeah, no, I will not be hitting on a married man while he’s dropping off or picking up his kid from school,” Willow said as Rob and Julie looked at each other.

“That's surprising if you are such a huge fan not to know that he’s divorced now,” Rob said as he looked at Willow, wiggling his eyebrows. While Julie rolled her eyes at him, shoving him in his seat.

“Life happens, Rob. Although, that would be the cutest ever if you ended up having a spark with each other while he was here,” Julie added as the bell rang for the passing period to start.

Thank god, literally saved by the bell.

Willow felt butterflies in her stomach at knowing that she might see Micheal Stanley at the school later in the day.

Willow stood outside the door, watching student after student come into the classroom. Looking at the seating chart for the first period and saw that a certain student’s chair was empty.

Starting the first part of the period was a review of information that they learned the previous year. Giving Willow a chance to ring the front office.

“Hi, good morning, this is Willow. I’m subbing for Mr. Crews today, I was just doing attendance,” she said as the door to the classroom opened, as a hooded figure walked through, sitting down at an unoccupied seat in the back, she presumed was Evan Stanley.

“Never mind, he just walked in. Thank you,” Willow said as she set the phone back on the receiver, as she went to close the door, seeing a figure wearing all black walking away from the classroom, but turned at the sight of Willow by the door.

“I was just calling up to the front office to see where he was. I’m glad that he came to class.”

“It’s my fault, not his. Didn’t set the alarm for this morning and slept a bit late,” he explained, as Willow felt her face heat at the thought of being face to face with one of her idols, Micheal Stanley.

Her eyes traveled up and down, taking him in. He has a lean body with well toned arms while wearing an analog watch on his right arm. He has a puka shell necklace on his neck, and his eyes were covered by sunglasses. With long black hair that Willow wanted to run her hands through. While noticing his attire. Black on black. Black shirt, black jeans, and black shoes, all pristine and put together.

“Well, if Mr. Crews is out more, I hope you're the substitute.” He said with a smile, as he tilted his head to the side at her, feeling his eyes travel up and down her form. She felt the butterflies start, knowing he was checking her out.

“I won’t keep you. But I promise he won’t be late again,” he said with a smile which made Willow have to lean against the door to the classroom as he walked away toward the middle school parking lot.

He’s twice your age Willow, calm down. Oh, I hope to god I don’t see him again at the end of school today. I don’t know if I could handle seeing him that close in person two times in one day,

Willow fanned herself before going back inside the classroom. Trying to keep her head straight for the rest of the day.

  Chapter Two

Willow’s thoughts were on her interaction with Micheal for a good portion of the day. Being surprised at her reaction to meeting him for the rest of the day, hoping that she wouldn’t have to run into him around pickup time.

She thought about Evan as well, with how he was in the first period. He seemed quiet, but also got the work done without causing drama with the other students that were seated around him. Which Willow couldn’t complain about considering that was basically the dream student for her. Getting her thoughts together, the bell rang for lunch as she waited until all the students left the class; she grabbed her lunch bag and walked to the staff lounge.

Opening the door, she saw Rob and Julie sitting together, as Julie waved Willow over to their table.

“So how was the first period?” Rob asked with a smile as Willow narrowed her eyes.

“Your class is by Mr. Crews’s class, isn’t it?” She asked, already knowing why he was smiling.

“Oh, he’s already told me how you were flirting with him. And how he checked you out too.” Julie said with a laugh as Willow felt her face heat as she opened up her lunch bag and took the containers out.

“Yes, well, I didn’t think that was going to happen. It took me by surprise is all.” Willow countered, hoping Rob and Julie would drop it.

“I mean, I never have seen him mentioned on social media, except maybe in a photo now and then. He’s an excellent student. Quiet, listened to instructions. Made it so I didn’t have to worry about an entire section of the class, really.” Willow said with a smile on her face, just happy that the first half of the day went smoothly, as Julie and Rob sighed.

“Well, that’s nice. Wish I had him in one of my classes. All it takes is one person to take an entire section of the classroom down. Would have liked him today, actually.” Julie said, as Willow’s anxiety lessened at the lack of mention of her encounter with Micheal.

3 o’clock in the afternoon came and went, as Willow was cleaning up the classroom, looking out the window, and seeing fewer and fewer students on the campus.

You know you are stalling so you don’t run into him again.

Willow picked up her phone, bag, and spare keys for the classroom and walked to the office to drop the keys off.

Walking up the steps that lead out of the front of the campus where the parking lot was, on the last step, her foot slipped. Her right ankle twisting one way as her full body went the opposite way. Willow laid on the ground waiting for the pain to hit and go away quickly, trying not to make any sudden movements. Willow slowly moved to sit up, grimacing against the pain that was in her ankle and shooting up her leg. A shadow came up behind her.

“Miss Willow, are you ok?” Willow heard a familiar voice that she could not place say, as she tried to move her head to look behind her and spotted Evan looking worried at her, and his father not far behind him.

“I’m fine, I’m fine,” she said as she tried to get up. Evan looked down at her, concern written all over his face as his eyebrows furrowed. Willow looked past him and saw the same facial expression on his father’s face.

“You don’t look fine. Here, let me help you up.” Micheal said as he held out his hand for Willow to take. She placed her hand up further on his arm to put more of her weight on him so she could get up.

“You're right, I’m not ok. I don’t think I’ll be able to drive home,” she said, dread in her voice as she went
through her purse looking to grab her phone to call someone.

“We can drive you back to your place, it's not a big deal,” Micheal said with a smile that reaches from ear to ear. Willow tried to put space between the two of them with a hand on his chest. Evan walked ahead to the truck, and stopped.

“Dad, someone is standing next to the truck,” Evan said, as Micheal turned to look at the suburban and saw a woman by the truck.

“Stay here with Miss Willow,” Micheal said as Evan took up Micheal’s spot at her side, as he walked a few feet to his car and talked to a woman. From watching the exchange, Willow could tell from Micheal’s stiff back that it wasn’t going well.

“Isn’t that piece of paper enough reason for you? Do you want me to call the cops?” Micheal asked rhetorically, as the woman backed off, flashing a smile at Willow before doing so.

Micheal came back running his hand over his face in an exasperated way.

“Sorry about that, with fame come odd interactions to people every once in a while,” Micheal explained simply, as he wrapped his arm around Willow’s shoulders, helping her walk the rest of the distance to the car. Evan opened the passenger side door for his dad to put Willow in the passenger seat. As he went to sit in the back, behind her. Micheal deposited Willow into the passenger seat before closing the door.

“Good thing you sprained your ankle today, while we were taking our time coming back to the car.” Micheal joked lightheartedly as Willow went to click in the seatbelt, keeping her legs where they were. Scared to stretch out her legs would bring back the pain that had been shooting up her leg.
